In my dual profession as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with numerous children infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler.

Tyler was born infected with HIV; his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medication to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were fastened to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing.

Tyler wasn't willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicineladen backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler marveled at(大为惊讶) his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. Tyler's mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast that she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she peered through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly spot him.

This deadly disease eventually wore down even the likes of a little of a dynamo like Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately, so did his HIVinfected mother. When it became apparent that he wasn't going to survive, Tyler's mom talked to him about death. She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too, and that she would be with him soon in heaven.

A few days before his death, Tyler beckoned(示意) me over to his hospital bed and whispered, “I might die soon. I'm not scared. When I die, please dress me in red. Mom promised she's coming to heaven, too. I'll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me.”

46.After reading Paragraph 4, we can know ________.

48.What does the author want to tell us by writing this passage?

A.People who are infected with HIV will die soon.

B.Having a positive attitude will keep you from the deadly disease.

C.Even a child can teach us a lot and be respected.

D.Everyone should have great courage to face the problems.

BERLIN (AP)—A tiger escaped its enclosure at Cologne Zoo in western Germany on Saturday and killed a female keeper before being shot dead by the zoo's director, police said.

The tiger slipped through a passage between the enclosure and a neighboring storage building, where it fatally attacked the 43yearold keeper, said police spokesman Stefan Kirchner.

“It appears the gate wasn't properly shut,” Kirchner told the Associated Press.

The zoo was evacuated and a SWAT (特警) team was called in, police said. But before it arrived the zoo's director managed to kill the tiger by climbing onto the storage building and shooting it through a skylight using a rifle.

Kirchner said it was unlikely that members of the public had witnessed the incident. “This is the darkest day of my life,” the zoo's director, Theo Pagel, was quoted as saying by Cologne newspaper Express.

The paper said on its website that the Siberian tiger was a 4yearold male called Tltai that came to Cologne Zoo from an animal park in England. In November it fathered three cubs with a 7yearold Siberian tiger called Hanya, according to the zoo's website.

Police said the zoo reopened after Saturday's incident, which occurred around noon. However, a planned latenight opening of the zoo has been canceled.

Cologne Zoo is one of the oldest in Germany. It was founded in 1860 and houses some 10,000 animals comprising more than 700 different species.

From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created:the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your selfesteem. Your level of selfesteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low selfesteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial(长期的) victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed(摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.

If you associate with positivethinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

53.People with low selfesteem are compared to leaves because they ________.

A.are ready to change their minds B.are easily affected by windy weather

C.don't have the power to face their fate D.can't exercise control over themselves

  54.Losers would think that ________.

A.success is the result of hard work B.working hard will lead to success

C.their failure is only because of bad luck D.they don't make efforts to succeed

55.It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ________.

A.whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes

B.developing confidence is the key to future success

C.thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind

D.setting our expectations is essential before taking action

56.Which is the best title for the text?

A.Success is a choice B.The secrets of success

C.Develop our confidence D.How to achieve success

I used to look into my closet and see clothes.But_these_days,_whenever_I_cast_my_eyes_on_shoes_and_jackets,_I_see_water.

anufacture (制造) a Tshirt, from its start in the cotton fields to its appearance on store shelves. A pair of shoes? 1,247 gallons.

Until last fall, I'd been oblivious (不在意的) to my “water footprint”, which is defined (定义) as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce goods and services. It was through the Green Blue Book by Thomas M Kostigen that I was able to see how my own actions contributed.

I've been feeling pretty satisfied with myself for all the drinking water I've saved: I've put in waterrecycling systems to reuse the waste water from my washing machine and bathtub. I've set up rain barrels (桶) to collect storm water flooding from my roof.

But now I realize that my daily consumption choices are using an amazing amount of water. Calculating the water footprint of my breakfast, lunch and dinner, I'm using 512 gallons of water each day just to feed myself.

  In a word: amazing.

Even more alarming was how much hidden water I was using to get dressed. It takes 7,996 gallons to make a leather jacket. It takes 2,866 gallons of water to make a single pair of blue jeans.

I realized I could make some simple lifestyle changes. My late resolution is to buy some items used. And I have no problem shopping less. I had a hamburger recently, and I enjoyed it a
clip_image007lot more since it is now an occasional treat rather than a weekly habit.

57.What does the underlined sentence “But these days, whenever I cast my eyes on shoes and jackets, I see water.” mean in the first paragraph?

A.The author can see water in clothes.

  B.The author likes water.

C.The author can know how much water was used to make shoes and jackets.

  D.The author likes saving water.

  58.What is “water footprint”?

A.It is described as the whole volume of freshwater used to produce goods and services.

B.It is the footprint that people leave.

C.It is the water that people drink.

  D.It is the water wasted.

59.Which of the following statements is FALSE according to the passage?

A.The author had cared about his “water footprint” by last fall.

B.The author has been feeling rather content with himself for all the drinking water he's saved.

C.He has put in waterrecycling systems to reuse the waste water from his washing machine and bathtub.

  D.He didn't like hamburgers.

60.What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

A.Eating hamburgers is the author's favorite.

B.A simple change in lifestyle can help reduce water footprint.

  C.The author goes shopping less.

  D.The author often buys secondhands.

  第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

  根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余项。

  A. Drug overuse and its consequence.

  B. The problem of drug overuse in America.

  C. Benefits of medicine and its wise use.

  D. Female drug overuse with reference to that of males.

  E. Misuse of medicine among the young generation.

  F. Improper use of medicine among senior citizens.

  61.K

Nowadays, millions of young people misuse and even overuse pain medications and other drugs. Research by the American National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA,1999) shows that around 2% of the population over age 12 were using drugs nonmedically.

  62.K

NIDA views medications as a powerful force for good in the contemporary world. They reduce and remove pain for millions of people suffering from illness and disease. They make it possible for doctors to perform complicated surgery to save lives. Many people afflicted by serious medical conditions are able to control their symptoms and become active, contributing citizens. NIDA points out that most individuals who take these drugs use them in a responsible.

  63.K

Nevertheless, overuse of drugs such as opium, central nervous system (CNS) depressants and stimulants does lead to harmful reliance in some people and is therefore becoming a serious public health concern. Although this abuse affects many people worldwide, particular trends of concern to the medical profession in the US appear among older adults, teenagers and women.

  64.K

Though it may be a surprise to many, the misuse of medications may be the most common form of drug abuse among the elderly. Dr Kenneth Schrader of Duke University,North Carolina states that although the elderly represent about 13% of the US population, those aged 65 and over account for the consumption of one third of all drugs. People in this age group use medications roughly three times more than the general population and have poorer compliance with instruction for use.

  65.K

In another study of elderly patients admitted to treatment programs,70% were women who had overused medicines. Unfortunately, this trend among women does not only affect those aged over 65.In general, among women and men who are using either an antianxiety drug or a sedative, women are twice as likely to become addicted. In addition, statistics compiled for 12~17yearolds show that teenage girls are more likely than teenage boys to begin overusing psychotherapeutic medication such as painkillers, tranquilizers, stimulants and sedatives.
