Named after engineer, military leader and public administrator Sir John Monash, Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1958. When our first students began their studies at our foundation campus in Clayton in 1961, we became the first university established in the state of Victoria in over 100 years.
Menzies building, 1970s
Early years
The early vision was to create a research-focused tertiary institution with an emphasis on science and technology. As Monash has always done, though, we quickly moved beyond the bounds of expectation. Free from tradition and convention, we were within just a few years of our first intake of a mere 347 students, offering courses in arts, economics, education, engineering, law, medicine, politics and science.
Creativity, innovation and activism
The focus on research excellence remained, but what grew around it was a culture of creativity, innovation and irreverence.Student protesters occupying Administration buildingIn the 1970s the foundation campus at Clayton became the centre for student protest in Australia, and this philosophy of challenging the status quo permeated the University. It remains to this day, although where once it was the Vietnam war and second-wave feminism that occupied activists' attention, today it is global poverty and sustainability, among many other causes. This position of leadership was not only confined to campaigning and advocacy, however, and Monash had soon become the model for a new generation of Australian universities.
Growth
The growth from technology/science specialists to general university was rapid. It was accelerated by a merger with Chisholm Institute in 1990, which saw the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses become a part of the University.A year later the Victorian College of Pharmacy entered into a partnership with Monash that allowed us to bring Parkville into our portfolio of campuses. The growth continued apace with the establishment of a new campus within the south-eastern growth corridor of Melbourne in 1994 - our Berwick campus.

International expansion.Monash South AfricaIn 1998, the Malaysian Ministry of Education invited Monash to set up a campus in Malaysia in collaboration with the Sunway Group. Monash University Malaysia was established in the same year, the first Monash campus outside Australia and the first "foreign" university in Malaysia.A second off-shore campus was opened in South Africa in 2001. Since 2014, Monash South Africa has not operated as a full campus of Monash University but remains a location where Monash University degrees are delivered, along with qualifications unique to this location.

Group of Eight founding memberGroup of Eight. To underscore the reputation that the University had earned, in 1999 we were invited to be a founding member of the Group of Eight, the coalition of Australia's most prestigious research-intensive universities.Monash had been around for just four decades, and yet was demonstrably holding its own against universities that had had well over a century to establish themselves.
Today
From a single campus at Clayton with fewer than 400 students, Monash has grown into a network of campuses, education centres and partnerships spanning the globe. With approximately 60,000 students (and 250,000 almuni) from over 170 countries, we are today Australia's largest university. The New Horizons initiative is a platform for excellence in future manufacturing research and teaching. The University now offers a broad selection of courses within 10 faculties: Art, Design and Architecture; Arts; Business and Economic; Education; Engineering; Information Technology; Law; Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Science.
Towards a portable test for tiredness
Saliva or blood tests may one day be used to detect when we’re too tired to drive or think clearly according to a Monash University-led study. The study found specific biological markers (biomarkers) linked to reduced alertness, including eye movement patterns, blood-based metabolites, chemiresistor signal responses and various speech parameters. If these can be used to develop a test, they hope to see it on the road and in the workplace within the next two-to-five years.“We’ve conducted studies in a variety of settings including controlled laboratory environments, occupational settings and on-road driving.“This is a major step forward in the pathway to developing objective tests of fitness to work or drive,” said Professor Shantha Rajaratnam, Sleep Program Leader at Monash Institute of Cognitive and Clinical Neurosciences, and at the Cooperative Research Centre for Alertness, Safety and Productivity (Alertness CRC).Nearly 20 per cent of all serious motor vehicle accidents in Australia are caused by a drowsy driver. In the workplace, more than 10,000 serious injuries occur every year because of sleepy workers.
“The problem is people just keep working or driving despite having a hard time staying awake. They don’t recognise their symptoms of drowsiness and the danger these represent,” Professor Rajaratnam said.Professor Rajaratnam is working with Alertness CRC collaborators, including theme leaders Associate Professor Clare Anderson (also of MICCN), and Associate Professor Mark Howard from the Institute for Breathing and Sleep at Austin Health.“Biomarkers of sleepiness will provide the foundation for more effective road safety laws and public education about when an individual is too sleepy to drive,” Professor Rajaratnam said. These biomarkers will form the basis of future technologies and devices that can become part of alertness tests used in the workplace and in roadside settings.“Comparable to alcohol, this might take the form of saliva or blood tests,” he said.
New research on whales’ teeth shows they were ferocious predators
International research involving Monash biologists has provided new insights into how the feeding habits of the whale – the biggest animal – have evolved. The research, led by Monash University and Museums Victoria was published in the Royal Society Journal Biology Letters, and is the first to show that ancient whales had sharp teeth, suggesting they were ferocious predators.“Contrary to what many people thought, it seems that that whales never used their teeth as a sieve, and instead evolved their signature filter feeding strategy only later – maybe after their teeth had already been lost,” said study lead co-author Associate Professor Alistair Evans, from the Monash School of Biological Sciences.“Our findings provide crucial new insights into how the biggest animals ever evolved their most important trait: filter feeding,” he said.
“Filter feeding is the defining trait of modern whales - there are few ways in which this unique strategy could have evolved from tooth-bearing, predatory ancestors, and our study firmly rules out one of them.”Researchers studied the 3D shape of fossil and modern teeth from museum collections in Australia and overseas. They compared how sharp the teeth of ancient whales were relative to those of modern predators, like dingoes and lions.Teeth are the main tool used during feeding and their shape reveals much about how and what animals eat.“Predators that kill and chew their prey need sharp teeth with cutting blades,” Dr Evans said.“By contrast, species that use their teeth as a sieve have blunt teeth with rounded edges that help to filter prey from water.“We found that ancient whales had sharp teeth similar to lions and dingoes so it likely they used their teeth to kill rather than filter.”
With our three integrated research programs, MICCN is a unique institute capable of revolutionary insight and advancement in areas of critical importance to well-being.
MICCN's addiction program researchers focus on understanding how the core cognitive processes, and their neural underpinnings contribute to vulnerability to substance and behavioural addictions (including obsessive-compulsive, and related disorders), to shape different forms of addiction and to influence recovery from addictive and compulsive behaviours.
Attention and Memory:MICCN's attention and memory program researchers focus on the brain basis of attention and memory, as well as related conepts such as consciousness, perception and executive functions (such as action and cognitive control). Rehabilitation and cognitive training in both acquired brain disorders such as stroke and traumatic brain injury, as well as developmental disorders such as autism and ADHD are major strengths of the program.
Sleep:MICCN's sleep program researchers use a wide range of methods to develop and test innovative tools to accurately characterise sleep and circadian disturbances. This information is then used to create targeted treatment approaches to improve sleep and therefore the cognitive and mental health outcomes of the population.
