European Union environmental officials have determined that two kinds ofgenetically modified corn could harm butterflies, affect food chains anddisturb life in rivers and streams, and they have proposed a ban on the sale ofthe seeds, which are made by DuPont Pioneer, Dow Agrosciences and Syngenta. Thepreliminary decisions are circulating within the European Commission, which hasthe final say. Some officials there are skeptical of a ban that would upset thepowerful biotechnology industry and could exacerbate tensions with importanttrading partners like the United States. The seeds are not available on theEuropean market for cultivation.
In thedecisions, the environment commissioner, Stavros Dimas, contends that thegenetically modified corn, or maize could affect certain butterfly species, specifically the monarch, and other beneficial insects. For instance, researchthis year indicates that larvae of the monarch butterfly exposed to thegenetically modified corn ’’behave differently than other larvae.’’ In the decision concerning thecorn seeds produced by Dow and Pioneer, Mr. Dimas calls ’’potential damage on theenvironment irreversible.’’ In the decision on Syngenta’s corn, he says that ’’the level of risk generated by thecultivation of this product for the environment is unacceptable.’’

RichardBurton probably knew nothing of the small South African town of Cullinan whenhe bought yet another chunky diamond for Elizabeth Taylor in 1969. Now theCullinan mine itself, like so many of the diamonds unearthed there, is about tochange hands. On November 22nd De Beers, the diamond giant that has owned themine since 1930, said it was selling it to a consortium led by Petra Diamonds, one of South Africa’s emerging diamond producers, for 1 billion rand in cash. Providedregulators approve the deal, the transfer should take place by the middle ofnext year.
De Beers isselling because the mine is no longer profitable, despite attempts to turn itaround. But Petra reckons the mine still has another 20 years of production init and plans to extract at least 1m carats a year. The unexploited"Centenary Cut" deposit, which lies under the existing mine, couldyield a lot more. This is good news for the mine’s 1,000 or so employees and forthe town, which has depended on the diamond business since Sir Thomas Cullinandiscovered a prospect there in 1898 that contained kimberlite, a rock that canbe rich in diamonds. The mine, established in 1903, is one of 30 or sokimberlite diamond mines in the world, and is believed to be still the world’s second-most-valuable diamondresource

When there is blood in the water, it is only natural that dorsal finsswirl around excitedly. Now that America’s housing market is ailing, predators have their sights on the country’s credit-card market. Analysts atGoldman Sachs reckon that credit-card losses could reach $99 billion if contagionspreads from subprime mortgages to other forms of consumer credit. Signs ofstrain are clearly visible. There are rises in both the charge-off anddelinquency rates, which measure the share of balances that are uncollectableor more than 30 days late respectively. HSBC announced last month that it hadtaken a $1.4 billion charge in its American consumer-finance business, partlybecause of weakness among card borrowers.
It is tooearly to panic, though. Charge-offs and delinquencies are still low. Accordingto Moody’s, a rating agency, the third-quarter delinquency rate of 3.89% wasalmost a full percentage point below the historical average. The deteriorationin rates can be partly explained by technical factors. A change in America’s personal-bankruptcy laws in 2005led to an abrupt fall in bankruptcy filings, which in turn account for a bigchunk of credit-card losses; the number of filings (and thus charge-off rates)would be rising again, whether or not overall conditions for borrowers were gettingworse.
The industryalso reports solid payment rates, w...

Scoresof workers from MTV Networks walked off the job yesterday afternoon, fillingthe sidewalk outside the headquarters of its corporate parent, Viacom, toprotest recent changes in benefits. The walkout highlighted the concerns of acategory of workers who are sometimes called permalancers: permanentfreelancers who work like full-time employees but do not receive the samebenefits.
Wavingsigns that read ’’Shame on Viacom,’’the workers, most of them in their 20s, demanded that MTV Networks reverse aplan to reduce health and dental benefits for freelancers beginning Jan. 1. Ina statement, MTV Networks noted that its benefits program for full-timeemployees had also undergone changes, and it emphasized that the plan forfreelancers was still highly competitive within the industry. Many freelancersreceive no corporate benefits. But some of the protesters asserted thatcorporations were competing to see which could provide the most mediocre healthcare coverage. Matthew Yonda, who works at Nickelodeon, held a sign thatlabeled the network ’’Sick-elodeon.’’’’I’veworked here every day for three years -- I’m not afreelancer,’’ Mr. Yonda said. ’’Theyjust call us freelancers in order to bar us from getting the same benefits asemployees.’’
