电子和通讯工程，又名电子和计算机工程(electrical and computer engineering\)，电子和通讯工程研究依靠电来运行的设备和系统的设计，制造和操作，从无线电话到大型发电机等，涉及超导，波传播，能量存储，纤维光学，接收和放大等。学生通过课堂教学和使用计算机来进行学习，特别是课后作业。很多工程学学生通过学习小组的形式来做课后作业，但有时导师比较看重学生的独立工作能力。学生还会有很多的实验室课程以实践课堂里所学的抽象理论。实验室课程也为学生提高团队合作能力和撰写技术报特供了很好的锻炼机会。
教学不完全在校园里进行，学生会花很多时间参观有关实验室和工厂，并利用暑假参加实习项目，国际项目允许学生出国学习和工作。各大学该专业的侧重点会有所不一样，一些强调计算机工程，一些在通讯和信息技术上会设置更多的课程。有些大学更强调理论学习和研究生教学。
